One of the most dangerous traditions in Igbo culture that has proved difficult to eradicate is the issue of Osu and Diala caste system. While the white men and women are busy fighting racism, trying to let there fellow whites understand that humans are the same,no matter the colour, while we are here in Igbo land segregating between Osu and Diala. Recently, the own of clippers basketball team..Donald Sterling was banned for life, fined $2.5million,warned not to associate himself with anything related to basketball for life just because he made a comment that suggest racism. This is truly a good decision, and the whole world praised NBA for such decision. This decision was made to protect the blacks, but unfortunately among the blacks in Igbo land the issue of discrimination rages on.
A young man will date a girl for so many years, shared life with the girl, received all the cares and love from the girl. The young woman takes every risk humanly possible, abandons all others coming for her hand in marriage, and only to be told later that "you are an Osu and as such we can't marry".And maybe with the flimsy excuse that "my parents would not want me to marry an Osu ".
You will see a lot of young men are women in Igbo land become friends, indulge in all immoral actions without qualms of conscience.while these are going on,none of them will ask each other whether they are Osu or Diala ,but when it comes to the level of marriage, the question of Osu and Diala becomes the centre of decision.
Most often people become sick and are hospitalized, blood demanded. In such situation, nobody ask the question whether this is an Osu or Diala blood, yet the blood is transfused into the sick person to save his or her life.
My dear friends,we are all one.Christ death made it clear to us.there are no longer Gentiles nor Jews.We are all one in Christ.Rise up friends let us destroy this monster ravaging our society.Old things are passed away and new thing takes the centre stage.let us destroy this tradition that has no relevance in this modern age and in our life as Christians. Let us embrace Christs' teaching and live accordingly. There are no more slaves,we are all free men.We are all equal, for we are children of the father, joint heirs with the son,we are family,we are one.
